Content Updates to Monographs
As part of our rigorous editorial updating process, the AusDI editorial team monitors safety information issued by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority (Medsafe), and the United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). FDA-approved indications and dosing information in adults and children are also reviewed by our editorial team and included in selected monographs.
The Dutasteride (Systemic) and Finasteride (Systemic) monographs have been updated with information on psychiatric side effects and sexual dysfunction based on a UK MHRA Drug Safety Update. Finasteride has been associated with depression, suicidal ideation, and sexual dysfunction which may persist after treatment discontinuation. Sexual dysfunction may contribute to mood disorders. Patients prescribed dutasteride or finasteride should be advised to promptly inform their doctor if they develop symptoms of depression or suicidal ideation.

June 2026
The Influenza Virus Vaccine (Systemic) monograph has been updated with information for the Australian 2026 influenza season. The composition of the 2026 vaccine differs from the 2025 southern hemisphere and 2025/2026 northern hemisphere vaccines, with the inclusion of two new strains for the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) subtype virus components. All influenza virus vaccines available in 2026 are trivalent. Information on intranasally administered live attenuated influenza virus vaccine and some recommendations from the Australian Immunisation Handbook have also been added to the monograph.

The Meropenem (Systemic) monograph has been updated to include information on drug-induced liver injury based on changes to product information. Drug-induced liver injury has been reported with meropenem and includes hepatitis and liver failure. It is recommended that hepatic function be closely monitored during treatment with meropenem. If severe drug-induced liver injury occurs, discontinuation of meropenem should be considered. Meropenem should only be reintroduced if deemed essential for treatment.
April 2026
The Bupropion (Systemic) monograph has been updated to include information on severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) based on changes to product information. SCARs, such as acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), have been reported in association with bupropion. If signs and symptoms suggestive of SCARs occur, it is recommended that bupropion be discontinued immediately and alternative treatment be considered where appropriate. Treatment with bupropion must not be recommenced at any time if the patient has developed a serious reaction, such as AGEP, DRESS, SJS or TEN, with the use of bupropion.
